"What may be the characteristics of the school in the 21st Century and what may be the role of digital media, tools, contents and equipment in this school? Responses to these exceedingly complicated and pedagogically stimulating questions usually range from the over-optimistic to the over-pessimistic. In any case, however, they always appear to induce thoughtful scepticism over issues that lie beneath debates and discussions about the modern school crisis, the need for educational reform and the innovative role and radical value of ICT use in education.

Starting from the acknowledgement that there are many different standpoints, this conference attempted to approach the challenging landscape of a newly established and highly promoted compound term, strongly related – if not identical – to ICT use in education, inextricably associated with the Media and Information Literacies, which is often described as the solution to the socio-economical, political and cultural problems involved in the phenomenon of 'digital divide', namely the term 'digital literacy'."
